The trick of using tricks right is that they should be just a launching pad, not an end in and of themselves... Seeing Troika for the first time earlier this spring (see Chris's Flash Review, 6-16: It's Chemical) and having heard the techno-hype beforehand, I feared Troika would be all techno and very little dance. But in fact, as innovative and original as Troika's tools are, they're really just triggers for directors Coniglio and Dawn Stoppiello to explore artistic, social, dramatic, and choreographic themes. In other words, the technology is at the service of the art. Their show was exquisitely simple in its themes.
